The Battle for a Dark Throne - Is Microsoft Losing Its Spot as an Evil Company?

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
class="articleContents">

For the longest time Microsoft was the favorite public enemy of the tech world. It seems like that role is changing though. Is Microsoft too inflexible to advance it's state of evil? Has it been overtaken by new innovative tricks? Joking aside, public opinion is shifting in new and interesting ways.

The Good Old Days

I Remember When These Babies Were Powered With Orphan Tearsclick to enlargeThere was a time in the past when Microsoft was seen as the undisputed bad guy of the technological world. There were a few key factors that netted them the illustrious title. Primarily, Microsoft's business practices rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. They were never particularly shy about them either. They were aggressively seizing as much of the expanding market as possible. This meant two things.

First, their actions drifted toward anti-competitive practices. For one example, they achieved easy dominance by throwing their weight around with manufacturers. OEMs knew that they would be at a substantial disadvantage if they didn't offer computers running Windows. Microsoft therefore was able to negotiate with signficant leverage, often requiring OEMs to pay a royalty on every unit sold, even if their operating system wasn't being used on the machine. There was also the controversial bundling of Internet Explorer with all copies of their operating system. By including a web browser on new computers, they were able to get ahead in the browsing software market, and add substantial value to their products. In a few steps, Microsoft heavily discouraged the selling of their competitors' systems and gained a significant edge until a variety of anti-trust efforts were thrown against them, beginning in 1994 and ultimately coming to a close with a settlement in 2001.

//This is for the ATF unitTmnAdsense.display(options = {'adFontFamily':'Arial','titleFontSize':15,'titleDecoration':'Underline','titleFontColor':'0153a5','titlePaddingTop':5,'titleMarginBottom':1,'descFontSize':12,'linkPaddingTop':8,'linkFontColor':'666666','adsbyColor':'333333','adstyle':'twolineurltop','adsbyposition':'bottomright','width':640,'ad_width':500,'max_ads':3,'adsOnRow':1,'row_margin':16,'channel_id':'0736364053'});

Second, they were widely seen as adopters, not innovators. A number of their key software components were merely acquired and added. Even Internet Explorer, one of their most important pieces of software, was added to the company through a simple licensing deal with an independent programmer. From a business standpoint, this makes perfect sense. It's always easier to just pick out the winners than it is to waste money on R&D in several fields. And it helped them grow and profit greatly. It just didn't do wonders for their image. People like to see the little guy win. Watching a big corporations buy up ideas and make them their own doesn't play well.

Microsoft originally had a rich history of apparent evil. They were the antithesis of the underdog. They utilized their size, power and popularity to gain incredible control over the market. At the time, that was fairly impressive. They're starting to fall behind the curve though, as new contenders rise for their title.

Changing Times

Recently, I put together a quiz which asked the readers to link nefarious corporate misdeeds with the appropriate company. I was quite surprised to note that Microsoft was actually left in the dust. Their old antics of anti-competitive behavior have partly fallen to the wayside, and partly become the industry norm. While they're still a large corporation with some of the usual faults, they aren't really pushing the envelope anymore.

For one thing, walking up to anyone and citing the sheer market power of Internet Explorer would probably get you laughed out of the room. Yes, it's still the leader, but the margin is so narrow that it isn't exactly a victory for them anymore. The same goes for the market as a whole. While it's still mostly a two system game, Apple's operating systems are at least making a public run at them.

It really seems like Microsoft could lose their spot at the top of the evil pyramid if they aren't planning to step things up a notch. They're certainly responsible for a few disappointments, but can you really call Vista or Kinect evil? Especially when you consider the new contenders for the crown...

Rising Star - Apple

If you're looking for evil actions, you're going to have to set your eyes to the newer players in the game. Just look at the innovation that is being brought to the field.

Apple's a good place to start, considering it's the closest competitor. While Microsoft focused on shutting down their competitors, Apple seems to be stepping up the game and trying to monopolize the actual customers. Their innovation in content management means that once you have an Apple device (let's focus on an iPhone for now), you're completely at the mercy of their programs and design. If you want applications, they have to be Apple approved. It's not that big of a deal. After all, they are perfectly willing to accept applications from competitors. Google Voice was added with ease, after the FCC threatened Apple with an anti-trust investigation.

The whole system is quite beautiful. They have a monopoly on content, getting their cut from every sale in their official store. They created a monopoly on their phones' service plans, which let them sell the rights to whichever provider has the most money to burn. And the list could just go on and on for iPods and iPads. Their computers are slightly more reasonable, with the monopoly on the OS only used to charge a whole lot of money for a pretty paint job and design. Of course with the Mac App Store, they can clamp down there as time goes on.

Of course, you can also add in their focus on privacy. Privacy is a vital concern. They want to have it. Apparently they think it's a type of "Highlander" situation, since they tried to get more privacy for themselves by killing privacy for others. The phone tracking debacle highlights that fairly well. Microsoft tried it with their phone software, but they just couldn't go all the way. They insisted on storing the information securely offsite. There's no room for half-measures in this contest. There's also the long list of freakouts over lost prototypes. Lost iPhones alone have led to police raids, threats against journalists and legally questionable searches.

Say what you want about Microsoft, but they're clearly out of their league. They let me use an iPod with Windows, and even install iTunes. Not sure how that slipped by.

Rising Star - Google

And since we're bring up privacy, Google is ready to swoop in and take the crown for that. I already covered some of Google's more unfortunate decisions in this linked article, and I don't see a reason to drag it out here. But let's take a quick look at some of their actions that stood out. They've now admitted that they allowed their Google Street View vehicles to spy on unsecure wireless networks through an unforuntate accident...that lasted for about 4 years. And there's also the Google Buzz fiasco, in which they decided to automatically put every one of their users into their budding social network. After potentially revealing vast amounts of personal information to your close friends/people who sent you an email once, they dragged their feet and reluctantly added an opt-out feature.

This shows an impressive commitment. There's an entire culture that seems to have drunk its own Kool-Aid. They genuinely felt that their users wouldn't have a problem with these invasions of privacy. That they're so trusted that it wouldn't matter. They were right too, judging by their ability to slip away from the controversy. They're avoiding major missteps at the moment, and they have some admirable programs at work.

Then again, a few people have said that these free programs are just larger scale versions of the tricks Microsoft was playing back in the 90s. That the end game is to build up massive brand trust with their free office software and wireless expansion programs. They're already acquiring online ad services and trying to gain a lion's share of that lucrative market. A Few Parting Thoughts for the Old King

I know that change can be hard Microsoft. You'll need to get used to no longer having regular anger and bile throw at you if you can't find a way to be a bit more evil. You're getting left behind by the actions of the fresh faces. I know you're still trying. Trying to keep Linux down by funding a proxy war is admirable, but that's not going to make mainstream news.

What I'm saying is, it's time to roll out "Window Shopping," the exclusive dealer of Windows software and applications, including exciting new content for the Zune 2. That one's a freebie, for old time's sake.

Could Amazon's Tablet Conquer the iPad?

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
class="articleContents">

More than a year after the release of Apple's original iPad, a credible challenger has yet to emerge. Android tablets appear too fragmented to mount a concentrated response, and companies such as BlackBerry lack expertise. Now Amazon looks to join the fray - but can they succeed where others failed?

Seeking a Challenger

Amazon Kindle Tabletclick to enlargeApple's iPad has so far dominated the tablet scene. That's not to say there are no other quality tablets on the market; I'm a big fan of the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, for example. However, competing tablets have failed to generate the same surge of sales that the iPad has enjoyed.

There are many reasons for this. Consistency of the experience, price, app selection, display quality, performance - the list goes on. Despite what some detractors may claim, the iPad is not a product that stands on Apple's marketing power alone. It is a well rounded, fast, capable tablet that's priced on par with the competition.

We've come to a point where it seems that Apple may have earned a permanent stranglehold on the market, much as it enjoyed with the iPod at the beginning of this century. I wrote in favor of this view just a couple months ago. Now, however, an unexpected player is rumored to be entering the tablet market - Amazon. Do they bring anything to the tablet market that other companies have lacked?

It's About the Money!

Of all the facts attached to Amazon's tablet, the most interesting is the price: $199

Amazon manages this partially because the hardware is simple, but that's not the whole story. The other reason for the Kindle's low cost is Amazon's ability to use it as a loss-leader. When you buy a Kindle, you're buying in to the Amazon ecosystem. You're buying books from them, and they make money with every sale. I don't know if Amazon makes profit on Kindle sales or not, but that's precisely not the point. The point is that it doesn't matter, because the Kindle itself is a revenue generating device for Amazon.

Apple also has this advantage via iTunes and the App Store. This may be why a company that is historically known for expensive hardware has managed to compete so well on price in the tablet and smartphone markets.

The new Amazon Kindle Fire runs Android, but a version that's heavily modified to integrate it with Amazon's store. Books, movies and even apps will be purchased through their respective Amazon storefronts rather than the default Android Market.

This is a unique position, and one that gives Amazon an edge over the Android tablets that have come before it. So far, the tablet market below $400 has consisted of gigantic pieces of dung barely worth their low prices. As such, there is a large un-tapped market for cheap tablets, and Amazon may be just the company to tap it.

The Hardware's Not Bad, Either

Amazon Tabletclick to enlargeAnother important statistic is the Kindle tablet's rumored display size of seven inches. There have been seven inch tablets before, of course, but they've generally played second-fiddle to their large ten inch cousins. Bigger is better - or that's the theory. A larger display means more pixels and a more enjoyable media experience.

Yet reality doesn't seem to have followed this theory. I've reviewed my fair share of tablets, and played with countless more. In my opinion, the seven inch form factor is clearly superior to the ten inch. Sure, you lose a fair shake of display space, but what you retain is large enough. More importantly, the size and weight of a seven inch tablet makes it more enjoyable.

A seven inch tablet is easier to carry, easier to handle, and easier to hold for long periods of time. Apple's refusal to create a smaller tablet has left a market segment open, and it's only by luck that the only people who've investigated it so far have been Samsung and BlackBerry.

Other stats of the Kindle Fire are equally impressive. Though rumors indicated that the tablet would have a single-core processor, it has actually debuted with a dual-core OMAP4 processor that's been used in many other smartphones and tablets. This means that, in spite of a budget price, this tablet will be able to compete on performance with much more expensive tablets.

I've previously stated that what matters most about the Amazon tablet is what's on the outside. The interface, size, and weight of the device is likely more important than the hardware. The fact that Amazon's new product is as powerful as others certainly won't hurt, however.

Can Amazon Crack the Market?

The Kindle Fire tablet looks like a winner. It solves the price problem that's plagued the iPad's competitors so far, and could present a form factor that will appeal to a different set of users. It's much easier to imagine consumers picking up a seven inch, $199 tablet to accompany them on trips than it is to imagine them purchasing a $500 or $600 Android tablet.

If there is any problem that could thwart this new product, it is the ability of Amazon to reach a "critical mass" of users. Amazon's new tablet, though it uses Android, is a platform all its own. It will have its own app store, its own ebook store, and more. The more users Amazon can attract, the more attention the company will attract from developers and content creators.

The company does not share Kindle sales data, but estimates indicate that Amazon shifted between 4 and 6 million units worldwide in 2010. That's a lot, but it's nowhere near the iPad. Amazon will need to sell far more tablets than it has Kindles.

Amazon's lack of experience developing a consumer product for a market of this size could prove to be a challenge. Is Amazon able to handle the volume if the product catches on? Will Amazon have a retail presence that can strongly promote the device? Is Amazon prepared to launch a serious marketing campaign in support of a Kindle tablet?

It's too early to make any solid predictions. I believe that Amazon does have the tools to be successful, but it remains to be seen if the company can use those tools to craft an outstanding tablet experience. However, even if this tablet is successful, I doubt it will have a major impact on the iPad. It clearly will not be as large or as powerful as Apple's device, and given the large price gap, there should be room for both tablets to play.

Choosing, Setting Up and Troubleshooting Internet Connections

class="articleContents">

You don't have to use the most obvious Internet connection type that is available; instead, look for one that offers great value for money, is easy to setup and simple to troubleshoot!

What Internet Connection Options Are Available?

Linksys router such as this offers cabled and wireless connections to the Internetclick to enlargeMost of us own computers that are connected to the Internet via a telephone line, either with a DSL connection or a fiber optic cable. However there are more and more ways to get online, such as satellite Internet, mobile phones and 3G modems and even wireless Internet in city centers and malls.

Making the right choice of Internet connection can benefit both your computer and your wallet, but your selection really needs to match your own expectations of the quality of your connection, the speed and the bandwidth.

Of course, you may have already chosen your Internet connection type, and be looking for a way of improving the speeds you are currently receiving. There are several ways of improving your broadband speed, from using an Ethernet cable instead of wireless networking to tweaking your router.

Problems with home Internet connections can usually be resolved, but like many things the fix depends on the severity of the problem. For instance, troubleshooting a “network cable unplugged” error might sound simple enough (you might think that simply buying a new Ethernet cable would suffice) but you might not have thought the problem could be a hardware failure – faulty Ethernet cards can result in the same error message.

One thing that should always be encouraged is having a backup Internet connection. This might be using a 3G dongle, using a local unsecured wireless network or even just connecting a mobile phone to your computer to use it as a 3G modem.

While getting online should be easy, it rarely is for users of some platforms. Windows 7 users with particular hardware configurations might have issues configuring their systems, for instance, although troubleshooting these types of problem is usually a case of running some small repair tools from the Microsoft website.

Windows Vista and XP users might also encounter problems connecting their computers to the web, although Vista users can take advantage of a few useful tips for improving their Internet speeds.

Major connectivity issues might be related to hardware, and in Windows there are plenty of ways in which this can be diagnosed. Less obvious problems, meanwhile, could be caused by something else entirely; many problems that are experienced by users trying to connect to the web with Internet Explorer are in fact the result of malware such as worms or viruses.

It isn’t just computers that can be connected to the Internet. Games consoles require Internet access to provide online gaming and opportunities to download additional in-game content and levels.

Whether you have a Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, there is a method for getting online that will benefit you. One word of note – while Wi-Fi might seem like a flexible advantage it isn’t really suitable for online gaming unless you’re in the same room as the router. As such, make it a wired connection for your games console, and enjoy the online services as they are meant to be experienced!

Internet connections for all computers are largely managed in the same way, but if you don’t own a Windows computer or game console chances are that you are using a Mac or a Linux computer.

While Macs are geared towards using wireless networks they have Ethernet connectors and can even be used with external dial-up modems if necessary. A Mac can even be configured to share an Internet connection, something that could prove useful for anyone looking for a solution to the question of a backup connection!

Similarly, Linux users should find that they are able to connect to the web without much trouble; any issues doing so can be easily resolved.
